i think seal pie i s horrible. from your picture it looks gone off. why would anyone kill innocent little seals. i think the law should ban killing seals unless hunters need it.

I'd happily try the seal flipper and aligator, but I doubt I'd touch the others.

Whoah! This is really world’s strangest delicacies. I doubt if I’ll have the strength to try these.

If that alligator taste like pork or shrimp then I’ll just close my eyes and think it’s really pork. However, if I have the choice I’d rather not to.

Alligator when properly prepared is not chewy, and doesn't taste like pork. It doesn't taste like shrimp either, since shrimp is usually briny from their environment and alligators are fresh water animals. I'm not entirely sure where you got your information from about alligator, it's definitely not rare, check out the annual Gator Fest in Anahuac, Texas.

Your source for preparation also seems a bit off. Why would you grill something you breaded in cornmeal? The gator skewers you're talking about are deep fried.

If you've never tried alligator, then you should. It's a really light white meat. Usually it tastes like whatever you season it with. Served best with some fresh hush puppies and boudain balls.

Thanks for all the very interesting information you've provided. I didn't know seafood and insects were the same allergy.

I am not currently a chef though i used to do that sort of thing.

I guess you'd just call me an adventurous reader and eater.

My girlfriend grew up in Mexico and is Cajun/Creole, plus i am friends with Dave Gracier who wrote a book on eating bugs.

I was a little surprised that i have had three out of the seven on this list but this list is a little mild compared to some of the things i have had and some of the things that are out there, things that i won't seek out to try (like fermented mare's milk, or monkey brains)

Gracier turned me on to Edible Water Scorpions or Giant Water Bugs from Thailand as they are called. You don't eat the outside but the inside meat is really good and tastes a little like tutti frutti or bubble gum with a seafood finish. MUCH better than it looks. A note i forgot, If you are allergic to seafood don't eat insects, they seem to be the same allergy.

But some of the other weird things i have had , my other used to make Cow's Heart Stew and fried Rabbit when i was a kid, I've had 20+ different kinds of mushrooms and edible fungi, Kangaroo, Whiskey made from Maple sap, Squirrel, Muskrat, all sorts of game birds, snake, Sumac lemonade, wild strawberries, Polish pickle soup, jalapeno-ginger ice cream, and my grandmother used to make elderberry pie.

A lot of the things we consider to be weird foods really aren't that odd, they are just things we used to eat but not they don't travel well or they are hard for commercial growers to exploit them. For instance the Paw-paw is from what i hear a great fruit to try but unfortunately it has only a two-week window to harvest it and it can't travel very well since it only stays fresh for a couple days.

Also some of the exotics are things that aren't safe to eat anymore like cow brains (contains mad cow prions and is fattier than a big mac)
