The movie Sideways did a lot of damage to Merlot sales in North America, while Pinot Noir sales soared. But what's funny is that the Paul Giamatti's character wasn't slamming the grape when he says "If anyone orders merlot I am leaving!" Merlot was his ex-wife's favorite grape. His hate is towards the ex-wife, the grape is innocent I tells ya! Innocent!

I've always felt that people who say they don't like wine, just haven't met the right bottle. All too often they'll try wines which are too young, wines which haven't had the time to chemically react in their bottles or barrels. Young wines often taste of fruit, and are usually unbalanced towards dry, sour, or sweet. Old wines become more complex on the pallet. It is then that you start to experience flavors like chocolate, cloves, tobacco, coconut, herbs, and many more.
